Today I ran into and killed a pigeon. I was not driving very fast, and even slowed down. Other pigeons flew away. This pigeon flew right towards the car.
I’ve only ever hit a bird once before, so that was kind of weird. Of the small animals that get hit by cars, birds are not near the top of the list. But. That’s not the only thing. On the same road there was also a dead squirrel and a dead skunk. I had to drive around them. Why are the small animals coming here to die? How many more will come to this road today? At least none of them were cute or useful animals.

You should see I-20 in Georgia. All of the world’s armadillos have come here to die.
They used to be a rare sight, but then this year there’s at least one carcass every quarter mile on that freeway.

I once hit two ducks, in Eugene. The first landed only a couple feet in front of my car and went up in a shower of feathers, not 100 yards later it happened again. Wtf?
